Artist’s Statement

I love contradiction. The human form is, for me, the most powerful and direct vehicle through which to convey the amazing complexity inherent in human nature, and the contradictions inherent in nature itself. I embrace the full spectrum of the life experience, and of the human experience, its banalities and its extremes. In my paintings I seek to juxtapose peace and chaos, humor and tragedy, realism flirting with the surreal. Paradoxically, I hope to communicate this complexity through visual simplicity. I choose to paint because I feel that through visual imagery we can share those incongruities that cannot be explained in words, but rather felt and intuited.

My paintings are an ongoing exploration of the complexity of the human spirit, its quirks and its inconsistencies. I use realism as the launch pad for my image making; and much as realism involves a 2-dimensional interpretation of the 3-dimensional concept of space, my studies of motion and emotion strive to channel the multi-dimensional concept of time - and relation to the changeability of human nature - through a 2-dimensional format.

Though my own work is primarily figurative, I look to a number of other artists and painters working in varied styles and subject matter for inspiration; those of which I am especially fond, however, include Mark Rothko, Gerhard Richter, Francis Bacon, and Vilhelm Hammershøi.
