FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 26 – June 26, 2007: “Fresh Art”
SAG HARBOR, APRIL 17, 2007 — The hottest ticket on the Hamptons’ art scene this Memorial Day will be Fresh Art, which opens at Karin Sanders Fine Art in Sag Harbor on May 26, and runs through June 26, 2007. The exhibition is slated as an annual event that will introduce gallery goers to fresh, cutting edge art by contemporary artists working in innovative media. Dedicated to displaying works by artists with an original yet developed vision and inventive technique, Fresh Art will include works by Orly Cogan, Richard Alvarez, Jill Corson, Diane Rollins Feissel, Cara Ober and Michael Souter.
Highlighting the show are several pieces by Orly Cogan whose tongue and cheek embroideries on vintage fabric have the ability to amuse and also disquiet us. In works such as Dumbo and Wild Poppies, playful, sexualized figures appear in contexts that are both surprising and familiar – equally conjuring unease and curiosity. The visions Cogan creates bridge nostalgia for a bygone era of ‘women’s work’ with imagery that is utterly post-modern; creating a fantastical, exotic dialogue between the old and the new. While at times seeming impudent, Cogan’s fabrics have the power to entertain us while also offering an intimate portrayal of femininity.
Richard Alvarez’s edgy and dazzling visions on glass also hang in the show and display the somewhat urban character of this exhibition. Equally so are the transparent layered photographic illusions of Jill Corson. Capturing a moment in a manner that seemingly mirrors the mysteries inherent in human personality – and in all that is commodity – Corson’s multi-layered visions appear in works such as The Door Between Me and My Calvins and Hunt for the Right Shoe. Standing before these works, one feels as if you might be looking through them. Portraits by Diane Rollins Feissel seek to put motion and emotion on a two-dimensional surface. Working in oil, Feissel uses her medium in a way that is unique. Blurred portraits capture the transient nature of life onto canvas while also describing the intimate character in each of her subjects, while the ironic and paradoxical are imbued amidst the seemingly decorative in the mixed-media canvases of Cara Ober.
Fresh Art will introduce one of Karin Sanders Fine Art’s most recent acquisitions. Michael Souter has just come on board as one of the gallery’s newly represented artists. His appearance in this exhibition with a single untitled screaming red portrait will give visitors a taste of what’s to come – as more of Souter’s work will appear in another show at the gallery in July - “The Nature of Art” which also promises to enthrall. Souter’s mixed media works involve a process of building his surfaces, which he then deconstructs and reapplies consecutive layers of paint – thus denying the painting’s uniform flatness. He eschews the traditional painter's tools in favor of using non-conventional and found objects to create texture and patterns. Souter’s work seems to take on a life of its own.
Fresh Art offers the opportunity to both new collectors and the seasoned connoisseur to view works by acclaimed artists that are new and fresh. Karin Sanders plans to take the concept to other galleries and art spaces on the east end with intentions of establishing a Fresh Art Hamptons offering a wide range of exhibitions coordinated each year for the interested art viewer.
“The art viewing public in the Hamptons is an increasingly sophisticated crowd. My hope for this exhibition is to challenge expectations and offer an opportunity to see work one would expect to find in SoHo or Chelsea. The region is ripe for quality works of contemporary art – Fresh Art is it.”...says gallery owner, Karin Sanders
