MARJORIE WEISS
For several years Marjorie Weiss has been working on a series of paintings that began with a drawing of a dog, his back to the viewer, pensively looking across the water. This image, Black Dog in Chestertown came to her from a favorite postcard, and since then "Chestertown", along with "Mr. and Mrs. Logan", "Wally" and "Joe" have all become familiar names found in the titles of her paintings. In each painting, Weiss uses images that are both detached and engaging at the same time. Each canvas is intended to be a curious and intriguing story that evokes feelings of mystery and enigma. Searching for an uneasy juxtaposition, the dark, silhouetted images adrift in the bold, brightly colored landscapes allow cryptic and enigmatic messages to emerge. A story begins to evolve, but is never completely told. At the core of her work there is a tenuous familiarity and an almost nostalgic lure, while inviting, leaves many questions unanswered.
